Instructors note: We’re going to spend today talking about what norms and guielines we can put into place to ensure this is a safe space.
3. 2:45-3:10--> Creating Community Norms for a Safe and Healthy Classroom Environment
What is a "norm"? NORM: an accepted standard or a way of being or doing things. Usually is an action/behavior that gives life to a value. If I value respect, the norm might be to listen attentively to others. If I value kindness, the norm might be to treat others with compassion and kindness.
Review norms from syllabus (Erin and Ashley will write them on the whiteboard)
What do you want to add to this? Write min. of 3 norms (1 per sticky note)
Try to make these actions/behaviors that we can do that really SHOW we're embodying something you think is important to make sure this space is safe and healthy! Rather than say, "be grateful" maybe write "we will have a weekly practice of class appreciations"
In groups of ~4, share out your norms. Lay them all out on the table and try to GROUP them into categories based of similarity.
ExamplesCategory 1: Avoid interrupting other people; listen to whomever is speaking; put distractions away Category 2: Treat people with kindness; have a weekly practice of class appreciations
In your group, pick 1 norm from each category that best summarizes/captures the essence of that category. Write it on a new sticky note.
One person from each group, bring your norms up to the whiteboard.
4. 3:10- Exit Ticket:
Write down ONE thing you will commit to doing to make sure this is a safe environment.
Put your NAME and the commitment on your sticky note
